NOUN Graduates Now Eligible For NYSC & Law School The Senate has passed an amendment to the law establishing the National Open University, which will make graduates of the institution eligible for mobilisation by the National Youth Service Corps and to attend the Nigerian Law School. The passage followed the adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund on the ‘Bill for An Act to Amend the National Open University Act Cap N6 LFN 1983 (Amendment) Bill 2017’ by the lawmakers at the plenary on Thursday. In the report, the Senate panel stated that the amendment to the National Open University of Nigeria Act was to bring the institution at par with the regular universities in the country.

Portugal on Sunday beat Mexico to win the third place at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia . The European champions edged their opponents with a 2-1 extra-time win after Pepe scored in injury time to deny the Mexicans victory. Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa saved Andre Silva’s penalty early on but trailed to Luis Neto’s own goal in the 54th minute. Efforts from Pepe in the first minute of added time and Silva’s penalty on 104 minutes, however, turned the match in Portugal’s favour. Both teams ended the match with 10 men with Nelson Semedo of Portugal sent off on 106 minutes while Mexico’s Raul Jimenez got a red card six minutes later for a second booking. Portugal were without Cristiano Ronaldo who left the tournament after his country’s semi-final defeat to Chile on penalties to meet his newborn twins.

Lagos Govt Upgrades 40 Health Care Centres The Lagos State Government has upgraded 40 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state to cater for all sexually related cases. The move is coming as the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Primary Health Care Board, stepped up efforts to implement the already launched the Sexual Assault Standing Order and Sexual Assault Evidence Examination Kit also known as rape kits. Coordinator of DSVRT, Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi who spoke at a recent training session for health workers of PHCs, explained that the Centres have been empowered to render 24-hour service, laboratory testing, HIV Counselling and Testing, and Maternal and Child Health Services. She said participants at the training were drawn from 10 areas including Agege Local Government Area (LGA), Orile Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ajeromi Ifelodun LGA, Ifelodun LCDA, Apapa LGA,

So far, over 5,000 persons have returned to Pulka, their ancestral town which is one of the seven wards in Gwoza Local Government Area of the state while many others are still being expected Humanitarian groups operating in Borno State have also continued to provide life-saving assistance to the returnees and other displaced persons already living in the town. Thousands of residents were forced out of their homes by the Boko Haram insurgents in 2014 when they seized Gwoza, declaring it one of their caliphates. While some of the locals escaped to the mountains, some others in their thousands crossed the border to neighbouring Cameroon where they found shelter. In one of the camps visited by Channels Television crew, one of the displaced persons Maimuna Mohammed, who was kidnapped twice by the insurgents, said she was lucky to have escaped twice as many others from her town were still in captivity. “God brought soldiers to the room where we were locked and when they
